Hynix
Thanks Oregon Officials for DRAM Tariff Support
Eugene,
Oregon, April 14, 2003 – Hynix Semiconductor Manufacturing America Inc.
(Hynix, www.hsaeugene.com) announced it had forwarded the signatures of
over five hundred employees to the offices of Governor Kulongoski,
Senators Smith and Wyden, and to Representatives Blumenauer, DeFazio,
Hooley, Walden and Wu expressing appreciation for the officials’ support
of the Eugene facility. The
company’s parent corporation, Hynix Semiconductor Inc., of Ichon, Korea,
has been the subject of a Department of Commerce trade investigation
regarding Korean made DRAMs. Resolutions
were recently introduced in the United States Senate and the House of
Representatives by the Oregon officials urging the Department of Commerce
to carefully consider U.S. and South Korean relations when determining
whether or not Hynix products produced in Korea should be subject to a
tariff when imported to the U.S.
“We
deeply appreciate the commitment of our elected representatives, and we
are pleased our employees are willing to take an active voice with those
officials,” said Jerold T. Olson, Director of Human Resources.
“We encourage employees to be active in their community and thank
them for their support on this issue.”
Hynix
last month was visited by Governor Kulongoski and subsequently announced a
$100 million dollar upgrade to the Eugene facility.
This upgrade is in addition to the $1.6 billion Hynix invested to
date.

With
this letter, the management and employees of Hynix Semiconductor
Manufacturing America of Eugene, Oregon want to express our sincere thanks
for all of your support in the ongoing trade battle.
Your commitment is important to each of us.
We believe our company is an integral part of the
business structure of our state. Hynix
has constantly strived to improve the facility and maintain its
state-of-the-art status through continuous investment and purchases from
local and national suppliers. In
addition, the company provides its employees solid employment
opportunities and a high standard of benefits.
As
you are aware, the Commerce Department recently announced its preliminary
determination in the trade case against Korean made DRAMs; a decision that
imposed a huge penalty on our parent company.
We believe that that decision is completely unjustified on the
facts and law. If not
reversed or nullified, this decision could have an adverse effect on our
Eugene facility.
We
ask for your continued support as decisions are made regarding the trade
case. We understand that your
political support of what is most importantly, an Oregon company.
It
is our hope that you will visit our facility soon to see for yourself the
importance of Hynix to our state and to its citizens who are employed
there, and to allow us to thank you in person.
